Consequences of Climate Changes on Contamination of Drinking Water by Nitrates on Prince Edward Island (2007)This project will examine the risks to drinking water contamination in a changing climate and the capability of the infrastructure and management practices to minimize these risks. Prince Edward Island land use, water supply infrastructure and water magement policies have all evolved under historical assumptions regarding sustainability. With the recent focus on climate change and great reliance the Province places on gruondwater, these areas are re-evaluated, with particular emphasis on nitrate contamination of groundwater resources. A team sharing experitise in agriculture, geology, geochemstry, hydrogeology and numerical modeling has studied the specific impacts of climate change on groundwater. The study integrates a watershed scale investigation of nitrogen export from agricultural soils to groundwater under current and potential future practices. At the Provincial scale, modeling predicts the potential nitrate levels which would result from various climate change and some associated agricultural adaptation scenarios.
