Release Date: Spring 2008

The Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Directorate at Natural Resources Canada is coordinating a national-scale scientific assessment of climate change impacts and adaptation. From Impacts to Adaptation: Canada in a Changing Climate will reflect the advances made in understanding Canada’s vulnerability to climate change over the past decade.

Building on the 1997 Canada Country Study and the 2004 report Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation: a Canadian Perspective, the assessment discusses current and future risks and opportunities that climate change presents to Canada, with a focus on human and managed systems. It is based upon critical analysis of existing knowledge, drawn from the published scientific and technical literature (peer-reviewed and grey literature) and expert (including traditional) knowledge. The current state of understanding is presented, and key knowledge gaps are identified.

The assessment highlights key issues facing each region of the country in a policy-relevant manner. It is intended to provide a foundation that informs adaptation decision-making and policy development in Canada, and provides examples of recent and ongoing adaptation initiatives. It complements the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Arctic Climate Impacts Assessment, by providing greater detail on Canadian issues.

The assessment is overseen by an Advisory Committee, involving experts from across the country. The completed report will consist of ten chapters and a Synthesis Report.
